As the global energy landscape evolves, South African businesses are faced with uncertainty in energy supply and rising costs. The urgent need for sustainable practices has compelled industries to rethink their energy strategies. At LNG Hub, we recognise these challenges and are dedicated to providing our partners with innovative and reliable energy solutions.
Securing Environmental Clearances and Site Acquisitions
A pivotal aspect of any energy project involves navigating complex environmental regulations and acquiring suitable locations. We are thrilled to announce that LNG Hub has achieved significant milestones in site acquisitions and has secured all necessary environmental clearances. Notably, we have acquired land on the port side in Richards Bay to establish our first LNG storage and distribution depot. This development aims to supply liquefied natural gas to companies in KZN, Gauteng, and surrounding areas. We are currently initiating the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Major Hazard Installation (MHI) processes, with plans to finalise supply contracts by November 2024 and commence supply in Q2 2026. Following the establishment of our Richards Bay depot, we will expand operations to Saldanha Bay, enhancing our reach into the Cape and Coega regions.
Adapting to a Changing Energy Landscape
The unpredictability of global energy markets poses challenges for businesses across various sectors. Industries such as manufacturing, mining, and petrochemicals face mounting pressure to sustain production amidst volatile energy supplies. LNG Hub offers a strategic energy alternative through Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), providing a cleaner and more stable energy source that minimises risk and supports long-term sustainability.
The Role of SNG in Energy Transition
For customers currently dependent on the Sasol pipeline or CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), we are introducing Synthetic Natural Gas (SNG) as a reliable backup solution. SNG, created by mixing LPG with air, can seamlessly blend with pipeline gas, ensuring uninterrupted energy supply while maintaining the cost advantages of pipeline gas. This solution allows companies to mitigate potential disruptions and regain control over their energy security. SNG can be blended with pipeline gas at ratios of up to 30% SNG and 70% or lower natural gas, providing a safety net until LNG alternatives are fully available. It’s a proven solution in many countries, effectively reducing peak time costs before natural gas becomes accessible.
